Sonoma County’s Best Obedience Dog Training

Sonoma County’s Best Obedience Dog Training "Sapir probably knows more about dogs, intellectually and intuitively, than anyone I know. That’s why I feel totally comfortable referring clients to Olivet for boarding or training. And whenever I’ve referred, the feedback has always been superb."
- Dr. Patti Piper, DVM, co-owner Windsor Animal Hospital

Communication is the key to obedience training which is based on establishing a constructive understanding and lasting bond between you and your dog. At approximately 6 months of age or older, dogs are ready to learn the fundamentals of obedience training.

If any of the following sound familiar, there’s a good chance you and your dog would benefit from obedience training:

"Max pulls on the leash and takes me for a walk."
"Fido is a terrific dog but he thinks greeting someone means jumping on them."
"When I leave Sophie alone I never know what she will destroy next."
"My dog won’t stop barking no matter what I say or do."

Teaching your dog good canine companion skills such as coming when called, waiting at the door, and not pulling, jumping, whining or begging are all manners that are reasonable to expect. Most dogs don’t intuitively know that humans desire these behaviors and that is where obedience training comes into play. Whether you privately train your dog under our direction or enroll your dog in Olivet’s Board and Train program, our role is to guide you so that you can effectively communicate with your dog and achieve consistent results.

In Sapir Weiss’ words:

Dog Training

"All dogs benefit from a leader who is kind, fair, and consistent. Good leaders teach manners and insist on appropriate behavior. When you have established yourself as the leader, your dog will strive to respond to your guidance. Understanding your dog and being able to clearly communicate your intentions are equally important to the success of the training. If you speak "human," while your dog speaks "canine," bridging the gap can be most challenging.

I teach the owner to communicate with their dog using the appropriate body language, voice and hand signals. Owners also gain an understanding of why dogs behave as they do, how they learn, and what motivates them to respond to their owners."
